    Hurricane Ike Batters US Mainland

    September 14, 2008

Hurricane Ike was the ninth named storm according to National Hurricane Center (NHC). It was the fifth hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. It just started as a tropical disturbance and then slowly it developed into a hurricane. This Hurricane Ike was the third most destructive storm to ever hit the United States of America. It came into Galveston Island as a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour. This hurricane brought a storm surge along the shoreline of Galveston Bay. That was really devastating. The National Weather Service in Galveston warned all the people near the bay to evacuate because there was a possibility that a storm surge might attack but most of them did not pay attention into it. That was the reason why a huge number of people lost their lives. Hurricane Ike killed more than 70 people in the Caribbean country before reaching the US mainland. People must listen in the weather bureau because what they are saying is really important.
